This Lawyer is Changing the Way We Handle Tila Cases

Tila Lawyer

Each month, I feature an interview with a lawyer mom who is creatively navigating the intersection of career and motherhood. Recently, I had the privilege of connecting with Kachi Tila-Adesina. An attorney and mom of two, Kachi is founder of The UpWomen, a platform and collective that supports women in their careers. In this new interview, Kachi talks law, motherhood, and shares how she helps other ambitious women live their best lives.

I honestly can’t pinpoint an exact moment. However, as I was quite vocal as a child, older people around me would often suggest that I’d be a lawyer. As a teenager and young adult, I was intrigued by the advocacy and persuasive element in court plus the use of flowery language so I guess that sealed the deal.

What was the biggest obstacle you faced on your journey to becoming a lawyer? Were the people in your life generally supportive?

Chrissy Dunn Dutton

Initially the biggest obstacle was definitely the  perception of family and friends. I was an A student and excelled in the sciences including Math! As a result, these stakeholders didn’t think I should opt for law but rather pursue a “smarter” career in STEM. So, I gave in and I tried out core science subjects for a year in senior school, (made excellent grades but wasn’t passionate about it) and then switched in my penultimate year of secondary school.

I eventually studied law at the University of Ibadan, graduating at the top of my class and with two first class degrees. The second obstacle was deciding whether to proceed as a barrister as I really loved the advocacy aspect of it. However, I realized quite early on—mostly due to the bottlenecks in litigation—that I wasn’t cut out for that and opted for a career in corporate law which I thoroughly enjoy.

I’m licensed to practice in Nigeria as a Barrister and Solicitor since 2011 and also as a Solicitor in England and Wales since 2017.

Truth In Lending Act

I started off my career in private practice in Nigeria and enjoyed the breadth of work. It was varied, exciting, and quite the learning curve. In England, the experience was very similar. Working on multi-million dollar transactions that often made the news and spanned several jurisdictions was interesting. I also enjoyed working with the diverse clients that typically come your way in private practice. The challenges were mostly the long hours of work in corporate, and being a little bit of an outsider to the businesses you serve.

Working in-house gives you the opportunity to be a part of a business and contribute to it directly—not just from the sidelines. That’s definitely my favorite bit. You also get to work with other professionals and could potentially have a better work-life balance. As an in-house lawyer you’re obviously working on more varied tasks and subject matters—sometimes as a generalist which could be a bit challenging.

I decided to go in-house right after I had my first son in 2017. I definitely wanted to spend more time with him, so that was one reason. Becoming a mum however made me more empathetic to the issues faced by mothers in the workplace, and I’ve seen myself take on more advocacy in that regard. More generally, I’ve viewed my career with a longer lens. It’s really not about the short term. Career breaks and maternity breaks are fine and there should be no guilt about that.

I believe being a mum makes the majority of women better at their job if the conditions are right. From problem solving, organization, ability to focus, time management, empathy, and so much more, there’s loads of transferable and soft skills that we pick up on this journey that truly reflect in our output at work. In addition, so many women note that having kids brings a renewed sense of purpose which they often channel to their work.

It’s been quite the jump! He was born in April and so right in the thick of the pandemic. Due to global lockdown our family couldn’t come over to help out. I seem to have been on autopilot for most of the time. It’s been 7 months now and in retrospect, that must have been quite hectic. However, it’s been super beautiful to watch him grow. I truly have loved every moment.

After relocating to the U.K. 6 years ago, I didn’t exactly have my circle of friends or family around me. I started my blog mostly to share my experience and knowledge with others who may be in similar shoes.

My posts resonated with my online community and the blog grew quite quickly, reaching over 100K views in under 9 months. Readers particularly loved my life experience and practical advice posts as well interviews and features with guests highlighting their own career, business, or motherhood stories.

Over time, a community evolved naturally from the blog pages, and many readers relied on the space for honest conversations and helpful content. In November 2018, I decided to take this community offline and began hosting IRL events. We had about 10 events in a twelve month period varying from a vision board/goal setting workshops, funding a £1, 000 business pitch for a female founder to inspirational networking events. Each of these events were centered around professional growth and genuine connection.

That community was recently relaunched as The UpWomen—a digital platform and collective for women. We provide a membership platform, resources, and events to help women up their network, their career, business, money, and life.

In 5 years, I hope that it’s a thriving and self-sustaining space where women excel, continue to live up to their potential and move up careers and businesses. I look forward to a global network of thousands of women and the continuous impact that we provide to each other and to the wider community. I hope that we have sustainable global partnerships in line with our mission to professionally connect and financially empower women.

Supporting, encouraging, championing, and being there for people in all the ways I can. From my family, to friends, my online community and the wider society. I’d truly like to give my all in a practical and tangible way.
