“I learned from Walter (Williston) about having the courage to take risks and to take on issues that need to be worked over.”
HAMILTON—One isn’t long in the company of Hamilton lawyer John Evans — a minute or so will do — before realizing he’s an inveterate yarn-spinner.

Ace Ankomah Speaks On Teacher Student Relationship With Atta Mills
See that time-worn wooden table serving handsomely as the desk in his office looking out toward Hamilton Harbour? Got it in Spain in 1971. A peasant’s dinner table. Cost him $200. It was shipped over to Canada in an enormous crate “you could have buried Franco in.”
John Evans thinks — and speaks — in that sort of vivid, often irreverent imagery, telling tales in pipes that sound to have been aged in a fine single malt.
He drops easy historical and literary allusion of a sort not usually found in the legal canon, from Michael Ondaatje to Tom Wolfe to feminist icon Betty Friedan.
Lawyers Request Evans Be Barred From Being Named 'ambassador' In Court
He slips enthusiastically into the dialects of, say, a southern matron or mannered Rosedale type, or he springs from his office chair to embellish a story with the pantomime of a glad-handing politician.

If, in coming from an Ontario family of long legal pedigree, John Evans was probably destined for a career in the law, it was also likely ordained that, having summered in Orillia as a boy in the company of Stephen Leacock, he would bring to the bar a distinctive sensibility, an acute eye for human nature and a decided taste for fun.
